Twitter is a micro blogging service where people can communicate with other people in real time, but in a 140 character limit. This forces people to be brief, concise and to the point. Twitter has sparked numerous lines of business in different markets such as blogging, Internet Marketing, Software Development and many more.
If you are interested in joining twitter, swing by now and sign up. It is free and will take you 10 seconds. All you need is an email address and who hasn't got one of those these days?
If you use blogs like me, you will already understand the massive power of twitter in driving customers or prospects to your website. This is commonly referred to as traffic. Twitter is a traffic generator like no other. After you join, you begin to search for other members who you share common interests with. Then you simply follow them. If they like what you say, or are interested in hearing more from you, they might follow you back.
Some people I know have millions of followers. Some of the celebrities fall in to this category like Stephen Fry who is one of the most prolific twitterers on the planet!
The key to twitter is tweeting. Tweeting is when you send a message to the world, or to your followers at least. You might be sitting on the bus waiting at a traffic light and tweet that. You might be shopping and discover a great bargain, so you might tweet that. You can tweet from your iPhone and other mobile devices. But for me, I tweet via my blogs. I have a great plugin called Tweet This which automatically tweets my blog posts to my twitter account. It helps me keep in touch with my followers.
Building a following in Twitter takes time, but there is software that can do it for you. Many of these programs use the Twitter API which is being discontinued by Twitter so they will stop working soon. There is also a risk of getting your twitter account banned if you use these tools to excess. I use a great tool called Tweet Attacks which automates a lot of the manual stuff you have to do on Twitter, but it does not use the twitter API, so it's much safer. They also have a free version you can use.
Another good one is TweetAdder, but it is quite expensive, although it does the job.
Well, let me assure you that once you get going with Twitter, I think you'll be like me - you'll be hooked. You'll look at your site every day to see who's now following and what direct messages you have to answer, and what new interesting and fun information you can see on others' tweets and profiles.
But first, before all those other people begin following you, you need to make yourself appear knowledgeable in your field, and that way people will want to follow you. Be sure to fill in your profile, add a photo opf yourself and make the content of your tweets relevant and if you decide to include a link to your site or elsewhere, you must use a URL shortening service. There are loads of these free services springing up, but the most popular is bit.ly and it offers tracking details if you sign up for a free account. This way you can tell how many people clicked on your link. This is great if you are a marketer and are testing various sales pitches in your tweets. You can see which tweets solicit the most clicks.
When you start building a large following, be careful how quickly you build a follower list. When using automation software, it's important to make it appear human, and not robotic. I only follow a maximum of 100 a day, and unfollow those who don't follow me back within 6 days.
