"The Leaden-Eyed" was written in an entirely different context but fully applies to two young American girls whose lives were literally "smothered out" before they had a chance to reap the joys of life. Their souls were starved by their insensitive worlds, their dreams and gods did not save them.

They didn't die like sheep, either. They died agonizing deaths by hanging themselves by the neck in their homes, the only places they could find succor and safety from the mean world and vicious people in their schools but places that couldn't give them relief from their pain.

It's simplistic to say that 15 year old Phoebe Prince and 17 year old Alexis Pilkington committed suicide. Both girls were the murdered victims of modern life, both suffered far more slings and arrows than they could withstand, both succumbed to sadness beyond redemption or salvation.

A freshman at South Hadley High School in Massachusetts, Phoebe was a recent immigrant to America's soil. The sweet, little Irish lass no doubt viewed her new land and home as a stupendous opportunity to do quaint deeds and fully flaunt her pride.

And then she met head-on the American educational system where detached teachers and administrators turned their backs on her and where student cliques teach more hard lessons than are taught in classroom settings.

One lesson young Phoebe failed to master was the unwritten rules of student life: One does not overstep one's invisible bounds. Unknowingly, she violated the dictates of those rules, dated a senior boy and thereby effectively ended her life.

Hounded and bullied relentlessly on both social interaction websites and in person, physically and mentally harassed and abused both in school and out, called an Irish slut by her peers, she finally went home one cold January day and hanged herself: /9bF4Tm

Phoebe Prince was buried in County Clare in her native Ireland, an ocean away from her torturers. Nine students have now been indicted in conjunction with the case; the faculty member who reportedly witnessed the bullying that day and tacitly condoned it by doing nothing got off scot free.

Pretty and smart, Alexis Pilkington was two years older than Phoebe. Already a troubled girl when she graduated early from West Islip High School on Long Island, Alexis was in counseling and scheduled to attend Dowling College on a soccer scholarship in the fall.

Unlike Phoebe Prince whose tormentors also physically bullied her, Alexis' enemies achieved their goal of driving her to a desperate act exclusively by cyberbullying on Facebook and Formspring.me.

Reports indicate there were other factors that contributed to her depression although the endless attacks on those websites had to have exacerbated her anxious state of mind sufficiently to motivate her to take her own life by hanging herself in her bedroom on March 21st.

Alexis Pilkington's lifeless body was discovered by her 12 year old sister but her death didn't end the harassing, mean-spirited website postings: /bUdkTQ

Suffolk police are investigating.

It's difficult to determine who is more to be pitied, Phoebe Prince and Alexis Pilkington or their deranged tormentors.

Principal Asks Parents to Ban Social Networks - Computers - Intranet

A New Jersey school principal has sent a strongly worded email to parents asking them to remove their children from social networking sites like Facebook.

Anthony Orsini of Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood also asked parents to monitor their children's text messages and to install parental control software in their computers.

The school's guidance counselor has been dealing with numerous social networking issues involving the students, said Orsini. Some students have posted inappropriate content on Facebook but when it was brought to their parents' attention, the latter did not know that their children had a Facebook account. Also, those whose parents found out they were on the popular social network promised their parents they would delete their accounts but did not.

Calling Facebook, MySpace, and Formspring "Internet scourges," Orsini noted that most of the students have an account on more than one social networking site.

"Please do the following: sit down with your child (and they are just children still) and tell them that they are not allowed to be a member of any social networking site. Today!" Orsini told parents in the email.

Orsini said there is no reason for any middle school student to join social networking sites and that doing so only exposes the youth to dangers like cyber bullying.

In March, 15-year-old Holly Grogan jumped to her death from a bridge after friends posted abusive messages on her wall. Her parents blamed Facebook for her death.

Last year, 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall was raped and murdered by a 33-year-old man who was posing as an attractive 19-year-old on Facebook.

Orsini said that while his email is not against technology, he believes that social networking is "psychologically detrimental" with possible long-term effects. Young people simply lacked the maturity to deal with a lot of negative things on social networks, he said.

The school official said 90 percent of homeworks don't need a computer or Internet connection; hence, students should not be allowed to have their own computers in their rooms.

Parental responsibility

Orsini is clearly putting the onus on parents to protect their children from the dangers of using social networking sites. Sites like Facebook prohibit those under the age of 13 from signing up for an account, but they have no way of verifying if someone is old enough to be a member.

MySpace was sued for $30 million for insufficient measures in protecting young users but a federal judge threw it out. The social network is protected under the Communications Decency Act; hence, it cannot be compelled to verify the age of every user as it would be detrimental to its business, the judge said.

According to the nonprofit organization Pew Research Center which examines global issues and trends, as of September 2009, 73 percent of 12- to 17-year-old American teens who had access to the Internet were members of social networking sites. The figures have risen steadily since 2006.

Parents have the option to restrict their children's activities on computers through parental controls. Some parents, however, may not want to meddle in their children's decision to be part of social networking sites but still want to protect the youngsters from the dangers of the Internet. Facebook's privacy issues

With 400,000 million users (more than the entire population of the United States which is estimated to be at 308 million), Facebook is currently the most popular social networking site. Its ever-changing privacy policies, however, have been the subject of much criticism by parents and privacy watchdogs.

In March, Facebook proposed certain changes to its privacy policy wherein users' personal information (name, gender, date of birth, profile photo, friends and connections, etc.) will be shared to "pre-approved third-party websites. This means that when a user who is logged on to his or her Facebook account visits another website, the latter will have access to such information even without the person's explicit approval.

The default setting for this feature is "opt-in," although users may also choose to opt-out. Still, privacy watchdogs said the default should be "opt-out," allowing users to activate the feature only if they want to. What makes the situation tricky is that some users don't understand Facebook's privacy policy while some simply don't bother to read it.

A Sophos poll revealed that 95 percent of 680 respondents are opposed to this policy.

"The results of this poll send out a very clear message to Facebook - its users aren't happy. Most Facebook users still don't know how to set their Facebook privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing and long-winded... (Instead of opting-out, Facebook users) should opt-in - making a conscious choice to engage, rather than having to make a conscious decision to decline," said Graham Cluley, Sophos senior technology consultant.

Then, recently, Facebook rolled out Open Graph protocol and Instant Personalization which further raised the eyebrows of privacy advocates.

Cyber-Bullying in Missouri Schools - Education - K-12 Education

Back in the day, the school bull would lock you in your locker or pick on you on your walk home from school. Now a day, bullying is a lot less physical. Unfortunately, with the creation of the Internet, bullies are starting to mentally bully kids through online threats and constant negative communication through programs such as MySpace, Facebook, Formspring, text messaging, e-mail and Internet chats. The Missouri school boards association added Cyber Bullying to its school policy and has since seen a decrease in cyber bullying.

The schools are working on being able to punish kids who cyber bully others, even from their home. This has concerned a lot of people that say the school has no right to monitor kids at home. That is a pretty big power for the schools to take on. As the majority of cyber-bullying does happen after school hours, when the kids get home from school and start to surf the web. They go on their MySpace, instant messaging and Facebook and get threatened by the cyber bullies. This makes the kids scared to go to school and mentally worried and stressed everyday. This is a huge strain on the students and sometimes in extreme cases, leads to suicide.

The schools are trying to crack down on this because they don't want their students affected by bullying. In a way, the at home bullying is directly related to school in that both of the students attend that same school and the student being bullied is fearful of attending school. Since this is so related to the school, why shouldn't the school have rights to monitor this outside of school? If this new law was started to protect our students and keep the safe from cyber bullying at school and at home, how does the school having more power really affect us negatively?

People are more concerned with the fact that they think the school has no right to monitor what the kids do outside of school hours. This would be a normal statement for anyone to make, but by punishing students for bullying others outside of school would only do good. The only thing that this use of more power might do is give the schools a feeling that they can start to control more of what the kids do outside of school. That would become a freedom issue and negatively affect the students by making them feel like they are always at school and constantly monitored, hindering their independence. Monitoring cyber bulling outside of school is not an abuse of power but a program designed to protect our children and bring cyber bullying to a reality. It does happen and sometimes it is fatal.

By adding anti cyber bullying into the schools policy it bring cyber bullying to peoples attention making parents, teachers and students more aware of it. At the very least, adding it into the policy might help a parent monitor their kid's online activities better and prevent cyber bullying from happening to their children.

If we go by eMarketer's study, then over one-half (56.8%) of 55-to-64-year-old Internet users will visit social networks regularly by 2014, up from 34.3% in 2009. In fact, even the +65 age group will reach a 37.9% penetration rate in 2014; now that's something.

The key to reaching out and retaining this target market is to design appropriate digital campaigns that appeal to them. Perhaps this is why older consumers prefer Facebook to other networking sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn etc. Facebook's clean, user-friendly layout enables social media marketers to design adverts specific to this demographic. However, with the entry of Google+ in the networking space we are eager to see if the older audience embraces Google's new social media tool with just as much enthusiasm. With Baby Boomers spending more time and money online than any other generation in the US, social media sites have expanded beyond just channels of social interactions and have become a viable platform for brands looking to reach older consumers. Earlier, marketers believed social media was all about Gen Y; this notion is gradually changing. With more and more boomers beginning to use social media, we expect to see a shift in the ROI realized from social media campaigns. As Owyang and Forrester Research have shown, "the baby boomer market is a fertile playground for marketers looking to easily reach an engaged audience."
